Curiosity takes me to the jays
Not of the baseball variety, sorry to you fans.
When I was in Calgary a few weeks ago, a blue jay landed in a crab apple tree in the backyard. While these are apparently fairly common in Calgary, we don’t often get them around our place so it was a bit of a treat and reminded me of Ontario, where they are all over the place (except during winter training in Florida 🙂 ).
On the drive out to Kelowna, I saw at least three Steller’s Jays along the highway. They are British Columbia’s provincial bird, and a close cousin to the Blue Jay. According to all about birds they are excellent mimics and can imitate birds, squirrels, cats, dogs, chickens, and some mechanical objects (they don’t explain that one!).
This one was eating at the feeder, hopped down on the railing to check me out and then flew away.
If I had to vote for the prettier bird, I think I would go for the Steller’s Jay as the crest is pretty amazing.
Thanks for reading and please feel free to share. Have a great day!!
