Moraine Lake is worth the chaos. I’ve avoided it for years as crowds are a huge turn-off for me, but I powered through on this visit and I’m so ecstatic that I did.
Get there early is good advice; sadly 10 am is not early enough. When there are people directing traffic through both stop signs in Lake Louise and a sign saying limited parking at Moraine Lake, you know it’s going to be bad. Power on…
Even if you arrive at the Moraine Lake Road and the sign says parking full, power on. Actually, just go a bit further up the road and turn around in the picnic area. Access to the road is only for cars coming down from Lake Louise on busy days, I think. Cars will be parked along the roadway a fair way from the lake, but take a chance and drive to the parking lot. I lucked out on a spot when someone was pulling out in front of me.
Surprisingly, with all of the people, there were still opportunities for quiet enjoyment.
There is a trail which goes to the end of the lake, but I still had a long drive ahead of me, so chose to climb to the top of the rockpile for the amazing view. The steps were narrow in spots, and it was very busy, but so worth it.
Tourists were fun to watch.
Even Chester got into (was forced into) the spirit!
Thanks so much for visiting!
