Reframing is my mantra for 2017
Have you worked for five minutes on a new project and wished you hadn’t started? Something that looked fairly straightforward, which progressed to very messy, very quickly? Reframing may be your friend.
Mantra may not be the best word to choose for my use of the word reframe. It means “a word or sound repeated to aid concentration in meditation”. That wasn’t exactly what I was doing when I started stripping the vinyl wallpaper in our main floor bathroom. The paper was peeling badly under the hand towels where water had dropped onto it and that curl had been bugging me for a while.
I grabbed the corner and a good sized strip came off. Well, the good times ended there and I may have said a few words repetitively, but “reframe” was not one of them. Whoever put this stuff on wanted it to stay for centuries. Back to the store to get a wallpaper scorer and more stripping goop.
The fumes were very strong! At one point I was visualizing animal shapes. A dog laughing at me?
So how did I try to put this into a more positive context?
My work jeans were a little snug around the waist from all of the good food eaten over Christmas. Tight pants are an excellent reminder to eat less.
The scraping movement with both arms is a good upper body workout, and squatting down to pick up the bits of paper from the floor will add to the squats I am doing to try to make skiing less painful. Reframing!

As I was looking for images to use for this post, a number of interesting articles popped up. The Ultimate Guide to Reframing Your Thoughts contained some useful information. I’m going to use the concepts throughout the year, whenever negative thoughts invade my brain.
In the meantime, the bathroom will get done! If the drywall can’t be repaired from my exuberant scraping, then we can always tile instead of paint. See you in a couple of months! 🙂
