Run in with a Red-Tailed Hawk
A recent hike up the hill behind our place in Kelowna brought me close to a Red-Tailed Hawk – a little TOO close for comfort actually.
The distinctive scream of the Red-Tailed Hawk is often used in movies for Eagles and other raptors.
Coming around a corner, hearing the scream and seeing the hawk lift off from a branch and fly toward me really got the adrenaline pumping! It flew to another tree nearby and then decided to keep a closer eye on me and hovered above.
The wingspan on these birds can reach 52 inches (almost as wide as my arms stretched out to each side), so no wonder it was a bit intimidating. I retreated under a tree twice when it tucked its wings in and started to dive…ahhhh, please don’t peck my eyeballs out! Would I be forced to use my camera as a spinning weapon to make it go away?
A little more research told me that was all bluff as they weigh less than three pounds and wouldn’t even go after my dog, Chester.
Let’s just say I was relieved when I was out from under its piercing eyes and able to enjoy the wildflowers and smaller birds.
Thanks for visiting!
