Women’s March Calgary
Kudos to the organisers of the marches in support of the Women’s March on Washington!! I have never really been politically active but was motivated to walk by events happening not only in the US but here in Canada.
You must be the change you wish to see in the world. Mahatma Gandhi
Four thousand people joined together in Calgary according to The Calgary Herald. What a sight! We met at the Famous Five Statues – a fitting location for the topic of a march to support the concept that Women’s Rights are Human Rights.
For those who don’t know the Famous Five, they are five Albertan women who endorsed rights for women and children and fought to have women recognised as persons who could be named to the Senate.
Why was I there today? Many were protesting Trump, but he is just the loudest and most prominent of a group of people trying to take us back in time. Here in Alberta and Canada, there are voices with similar opinions and I was marching to say THAT IS NOT OK! I support equal rights for all, a woman’s right to choose and the LGBT community.
Seeing all of the participants in marches across the world gave me hope that there are enough voices to peacefully unite around social issues instead of causing divisions and fear.
To deny people their human rights is to challenge their very humanity. Nelson Mandela
I was encouraged by the young people out as they are the ones who will be most impacted if Trump and other leaders succeed in pushing through regressive legislation.
And because I can’t resist a cute animal shot, even Yoda ( the Star Wars Jedi Master who was small in size but wise and powerful) came out today – a good sign.
